Terry knew Cyrus was keeping something significant from her, but she wasn’t sure how to broach the topic in a way she hadn’t already tried. He’d been successfully evading questions since they’d met, and she wanted to respect his wishes to allow her to get to know him without his past—whatever it was—clouding her impression.

I never should have signed up for any of this, she admitted to herself. But why am I still curious enough to stick around?

The situation she’d stumbled into on the Celestiana was an odd balance between the familiar team dynamics of her time as a mechanic on Gallas, and the kind of system-jumping adventure she’d yearned to experience. Even though she was now back in the place she’d vowed to leave behind, she tried to remind herself that she was no longer trapped the way she used to be.

I can leave again whenever I want…right?

By the time Cyrus emerged from his quarters, the rest of the crew had convened in the galley.

“I have a new job for us,” he announced as he stepped into the room.

“Does it pay well?” Vic asked.

Bryn sighed. “Remember? That won’t matter after this next job. I just want to know how much of a pain in the ass it will be, and if it will delay our big payday.”

“Can’t make promises, but it’ll barely be a detour,” Cyrus replied.

“No, don’t tell me…” Bryn faded out.

He nodded.

She pursed her lips, shaking her head. “I thought we were done with that.”

“So did I.”

Terry half-raised her hand. “Sorry, am I missing something?”

“Nothing to worry about,” Cyrus hastily replied before one of the other crew members had a chance to speak up. “Just a little investigative favor for a friend.”

Based on the looks the others exchanged, Terry knew there was something else going on.

“Who is this friend?” she asked.

“Someone with enough pull to either make life easier on us, or more difficult. Let’s just say that if we do this person a favor, they’re a good ally to have owe us one,” he said cryptically.

When he didn’t offer anything more, Terry shrugged. “Whatever you say.”

Mai rolled her eyes. “Let’s just complete this damned delivery. If there’s time for your detour before we find a good weapons shipment to intercept, we can do it.”

“I’ll have a list of potential targets soon,” Cyrus said. He rubbed his hands together. “Now, we still have a few hours before we make it to the drop-off. Who’s up for a round of Snark?”
